Issue: Sue Wallis, champion for the horse slaughter industry
Priority: NORMAL-WATCHING
Situation Report Update: Sue Wallis calls for elimination of food standards
Sue Wallis, the "in your face" champion for selling contaminated horsemeat to Europe is now looking to poison Americans. Wallis is a backer of House Bill 54, a measure in the Wyoming State Legislature that would exempt food producers from licenses, inspections and certifications when selling directly to consumers.
Anyone who has suffered through a bout of salmonella or other food related malady can appreciate the potential public harm if producers are exempt from all forms of monitoring and standards. While many of us abhor overreaching government regulations, we need to have confidence in our food supply and, quite franky, not all producers will provide food under appropriate standards unless they are required to.
What House Bill 54 has revealed is a small corps of people who are set on making it easier for producers to pass on contaminated products while dismissing the potential impacts on the public at large.
One of the advantages of living in America is that in general we don't have to worry if our food and water will make us sick. Clearly some people want to lower those standards in order to line the pockets of substandard producers, doctors and foodborne illness attorneys.
One of the more prominent foodborne illness attorneys and food safety advocates is William Marler. He posted a "Thank you" editorial to Sue Wallis, dubbing HB54 "The Bill Marler Full Employment Act." His editorial can be read on the
Huffington Post.
