Nevada Legislature's New Assault on Wild Horses?
Part Two

February 11, 2011
Legislative Committee for Public Lands goes after wild horses
Continued from Part One.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

If you find the language in SJR-5 disturbing you can contact current members of the Nevada State Legislature and express your opinion. If you do so, please remember that most of the people who drafted this language are no longer members of the Legislature, so please be courteous and informative to those legislators who weren't involved in writing SJR-5 but who will likely vote on it.

The measure will likely first go to the Assembly and Senate Committees. The State now has a new legislative information service called "Nevada Electronic Legislative Information System" or "NELIS." NELIS allows you to quickly access current bill and committee information. You can access NELIS by clicking Here.

Since SJR-5 was drafted by an interim committee, not the current Legislature, you may need to use the following link in order to follow the bill's history.

Where the bill will go from here.

The Bill has been referred to the Senate's Committee on Natural Resources..

The Chair of the Committee is Mark Manendo. His email is [email protected]. Please remember that Chairman Manendo did not write this language!

If the bill passes out of the Senate committee, it will likely next go to the Assembly's Committee on Natural Resources, Agriculture and Mining.

Formal constructive comments can be sent to [email protected]. Please remember that these comments will be retained as part of the official public record so please be professional when making comments.

The Chair of the Committee is Maggie Carlton. Her email is [email protected]. Please remember that Chairman Carlton did not write this language and in fact is supportive of rational wild horse management.

The Nevada Legislature has an automated bill tracking system that will keep you informed as to any bill's progress and scheduled hearings. To subscribe to the Personalized Bill Tracking system, click here.

The Legislature has an on-line polling system to track interest and opinions regarding bills under consideration. You can access this service by visiting the Share Your Opinion page. Please remember, however, that while these polls are useful, the do not carry the same weight as individual comments.

If you are a Nevada resident you can locate your legislators and their contact information from this page: Legislator Information.

Nevada's economy is heavily dependent on tourism. If you are a nonresident / tourist, the committees are still interested in your constructive comments and opinions. Please use the committee links (above).

Get involved with legislative activities. Constructive interaction with legislators helps produce beneficial legislation. The Nevada State Legislature has a useful web site that can be visited by clicking here.
