RUMOR SURFACE DATE: January 28, 2005
SOURCE: Multiple Sources
STATUS: Edsel has apparently expressed interest, BLM has received nothing in writing.
There have been multiple sources who believe that Merle Edsall is preparing a proposal to purchase the entire lot of some 8,400 plus "Burns Rider" horses. Concerns are that under the Burns Rider, these horses are no longer protected and could be traded or resold for a quick profit.
BLM's position on this rumor is as follows:
Mr. Edsall has in the past expressed interest in the BLM horses held in sanctuary. BLM spokespersons have expressed assurances that the Bureau will be careful and methodical in following both the intents and the letters of the various laws that apply to the disposition of the sale authority horses. The Bureau is currently in the process of developing a sale policy that complies with the new law as well as any other laws that may apply.
As of this date the BLM has not received any formal written proposal from Mr. Edsall. BLM cannot comment on the propriety of any proposal that Mr. Edsall may be developing until it is received in writing and studied. In any event, and regardless as to whether Mr. Edsall's proposal is considered or not, the disbursement of the sanctuary horses will be conducted in accordance with all applicable laws and policies.
Anyone interested in buying a wild horse or burro, or who has any questions about the BLM's new sale authority, should call 1-800-710-7597 or e-mail [email protected].
Webmaster's note: Additional official information on the implementation of the "Burns Rider" sale authority process can be viewed on the BLM web site at http://www.blm.gov/nhp/spotlight/whb_authority.
