In 1971 Congress unanimously declared America's wild free-roaming horses and burros to be Living Symbols of the Historic and Pioneering Spirit of the West. Just before the Thanksgiving recess in 2004, Senator Conrad Burns (R-MT) snuck a rider onto the huge omnibus spending bill that gutted the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act and placed over 8,000 horses and an undetermined number of burros in immediate risk of being sold to slaughter.

The Alliance of Wild Horse Advocates is a nation wide federation of large and small wild horse and animal welfare groups and non-affiliated individuals who have an interest in stopping the slaughter of, and restoring protections for, America's free-roaming horses and burros.

The objectives of the Alliance include acquiring and distributing accurate and up to date information, educating its participants of relevant issues, sharing information about activities taking place in the various states and regions, and determining the most appropriate and ethical actions that groups and individual citizens can take to stop the impending slaughter of thousands of our wild horses.
