The Rider that Senator Burns snuck into the Omnibus Appropriations Bill identified two classes of so-called "unadoptable" wild horses and burros that will now have to be sold "by all available means." These are horses and burros over ten years of age, or any animals of any age that were presented for adoption three times and were not adopted.
With 8,400 wild horses and burros meeting this classification, the only viable commercial market involves the "kill buyers," purchasers for the meat packers, dog food and chicken feed producers and renderers. The hard economic facts are that when these animals are adopted, they contribute on average $20,000.00 to the local agricultural economy over their lifetimes. If instead they are sold for slaughter, they end up making quick profits for foreign owned meat packers. The purpose of this section is to provide a few examples of these so-called unadoptable animals and their accomplishments in instances where the activities were sufficiently documented to make interesting presentations. |
