The Power of Action over Words
by Meritt Clifton

Speaking as a veteran "noosepaper" reporter with more than 35 years of experience at making politicians uncomfortable, I strongly recommend delivering letters in person if possible, on constituent visiting days back in the home district, preferably early in the morning.

I learned long ago that if the first person a politician saw when he got out of his car to enter the office was me, already standing by the door, I would get immediate attention and the issue I was bringing to his/her attention would be taken very seriously. If I brought a cardboard box or file folder full of evidence with me, I would be taken more seriously still.

One person waiting at the door, engaged in discussion for even five minutes, is worth that person's weight in constituent mail--and one letter on paper, by the way, is worth enough voltage in e-mails to transmit any two politicians to Hades.
